Who we are
AbleStay NZ (ablestay.co.nz) is a New Zealand-based directory of accessible accommodation. We collect and use personal information in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.

What information we collect
When you create an account
We collect your name, email address, and password (stored securely as a one-way hash). We also store your account role (visitor or property owner) and when your account was created.
When you write a review
We collect your review content, star ratings, and optionally your disability or mobility type if you choose to share it. Your name (as registered) is displayed publicly alongside your review.
When you submit a property listing
We collect property details including name, address, contact information, and accessibility features. If you are logged in, your account is linked to the submission.
When you use the contact form
We collect your name, email address, and message content.
Automatically collected information
We use a session cookie to keep you logged in. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking. We do not use Google Analytics or similar tracking services.
How we use your information
- To operate your account and allow you to log in
- To display your reviews on listing pages (your name is shown; your email is never displayed publicly)
- To process and review property listing submissions
- To respond to contact form enquiries
- To send service-related emails (e.g. account confirmation)
- We do not sell your data to third parties
- We do not use your data for advertising
Who can see your information
Your reviews — your name and review content are publicly visible on listing pages. Your email address, disability type (if provided), and other account details are not shown publicly.
Your account details — visible only to you and site administrators.
Property submissions — visible to site administrators for review purposes.
Contact messages — visible to site administrators only.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored on servers in New Zealand. Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes — we cannot retrieve your original password. We use HTTPS to encrypt data in transit.
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no internet transmission is completely secure.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your account and associated data

Cookies
We use a single session cookie (ablestay_session) to keep you logged in. This cookie contains no personal information and is deleted when you log out or close your browser. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party cookies.

Listing pages may contain links to external accommodation websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those websites. We encourage you to read their privacy policies before providing personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of AbleStay after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
